About the maker

Maria Karte

I am an artisan jeweller and blacksmith from southeast Finland, Kouvola. I’m strongly inspired by nature and old techniques. The art of filigree and sand casting are the ones closest to my heart of jewellery techniques. Both of these techniques I studied abroad during my artisan studies. Sand casting technique I studied in Australia and filigree technique in Malta.

My other great passion is blacksmithing. The process of forging, where metal is heated and hammered into shape is addictive to me. I love the thought that it has always been done like that. Like my mentor said: If you put a blacksmith from the past in a time machine and he would be taken to our time, the basic tools would be the same and the job could be done. I also like the fact that steel is a very recyclable material. You can create something beautiful out of a rusty piece of metal.

My former profession is an agrologist and an organic farmer. I love the countryside, forests, animals and nature being close. In Finland we have four very different seasons and each one of them inspires me in their own way.

In my jewellery I want to highlight different textures and organic shapes. I like the ancient look that sand casting technique gives to my jewellery. For every jewellery piece I create a mold from sand for that specific piece only. There will never be another one exactly similar piece. It is always unique.

Sand casting makes possible also to cast small objects like for example cabinet handles or other decorative items. I can cast also brass, bronze and copper.

Filigree technique is also an ancient jewellery making technique. Twisting and forming the thin silver wires into different shapes facinates me. Also that you can build something so firm and durable out of something so delicate and light weight feels amazing.

By using these techniques in my work I'm also preserving the cultural heritage of my trade. I hope I can get you as excited of these techniques as I am.
